Thanks in large part to the media, our society has unfortunately rested on the idea that unless you are thin, you aren’t really healthy. And this just simply is not true!
When it comes to physical fitness, there is a lot more that needs to be factored into the equation than just the number on the scale. Everybody is different, and every body is different. In their pursuit to live a healthier lifestyle, too many people become overly fixated on what they weigh that they end up hurting themselves in the process, or making decisions based on what has worked for other people hoping that their methods will produce similar results.
And while it would be nice if the process were this simple, the truth of the matter is that your biochemical makeup is unique to you, so your process of losing weight and getting in shape might look a little different than other peoples. And that’s okay! You might never be a size 2 or have six-pack abs that reflect those of a body builder. That’s okay, too.
The important thing to remember when it comes to physical fitness is that feeling healthy is just as important as looking it. Usually if you are taking the right approach and listening to your own body about living a healthy lifestyle, you won’t just see results on the outside, you’ll feel them on the inside as well.
It is impossible to do this without making sure we are getting the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals our body needs to be in their best shape. If you have been working out and dieting for months and haven’t seen any positive changes as a result, chances are likely that you are neglecting certain foods and vitamins from trying to cut out a particular food group or only modifying your approach in the gym, rather than the kitchen as well.
You need to remember to treat your body like a car. You can shine and polish it to look great on the outside, but if you aren’t taking the right steps to maintain what’s under the hood, it’s not going to take you very far.
A person who is determined to lose weight by extreme dieting is bound to be nutrient deficient at some point. And over the long term, those very deficiencies could damage a person’s immune system, thus increasing their risk of becoming ill and having ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immune deficiencies, etc.
“It’s suggested that we eat 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies daily, but according to 2009 statistics, no state or territory in the U.S. has over 50% of their population consuming fruit more than twice a day, or vegetables 3 times a day. It actually has decreased a bit.”
Make no mistake: Attempting to look our best isn’t a bad thing. There’s nothing wrong with trying to improve yourself. We ALL should strive to be better in some way; that’s the basic premise of my book. Unfortunately, what we want and the METHODS we use may not be the best for us. Some of the things we’re doing to ourselves may be doing more harm than good.
It is important to get honest with yourself about which goals are realistic and which are setting an impossibly high standard for you to meet. I elaborate on all of this in my book, including which vitamins and nutrients will help you stay energized and motivated to work out, without contaminating your body with toxic ingredients and empty calories.
While making the decision to eat healthier and work out more is progress within itself, I understand the frustration many people experience when they aren’t getting anywhere near the results they want. It’s not that your body is not capable of losing weight and toning muscle, but rather that you need some outside advice to offer you the guidance and insight you need. You don’t want to waste more energy or time than necessary to get healthier. It shouldn’t feel like a punishment! It should feel like a reward. So if you have been trying to improve your physical fitness, and are repeatedly hitting a wall of defeat and discouragement, my book may offer you the solutions you need.
The truth is that you don’t ever really know how healthy somebody is just by looking at them. They can be very thin but be extremely deficient in a lot of vitamins and nutrients. Don’t let your physical appearance become a distraction for your physical fitness!
