Iron Deficiency by Jeff White

The most common deficiency in the United States is iron deficiency. More than 3 million cases are reported yearly. Iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia–a condition characterized by a lack of red blood cells in the body.

Iron deficiency is typically treated with a regimen of iron supplements while trying to find the underlying problem–what’s causing the deficiency.

Here are the stats:

6.7% deficient. Among women ages 12 to 29, 9.5% were deficient, as were 6.7% of children ages 1 to 5. There were higher rates of iron deficiency in Mexican-American children aged 1 to 5 years (11%) and in non-Hispanic black (16%) and Mexican-American women (13%) of childbearing age (12 to 49 years) when compared to other race/ethnic groups. Few men were deficient in iron, but 29% were at risk for iron excess.

There are many symptoms that could be indicative of an iron deficiency, including pale skin, frequent headaches, fast heartbeat, extreme fatigue, weakness, chest pain, etc. The lower your iron levels are the worse your symptoms will be.

Remember, your fitness journey is not about just looking “good” on the outside, but, most importantly, it’s about being healthy on the inside. Don’t be so obsessed with the latest fitness trends that you forget to actually do the work.

Feeling (Not Just Looking) Healthy

Thanks in large part to the media, our society has unfortunately rested on the idea that unless you are thin, you aren’t really healthy. And this just simply is not true! lookinghealthy

When it comes to physical fitness, there is a lot more that needs to be factored into the equation than just the number on the scale. Everybody is different, and every body is different. In their pursuit to live a healthier lifestyle, too many people become overly fixated on what they weigh that they end up hurting themselves in the process, or making decisions based on what has worked for other people hoping that their methods will produce similar results.

And while it would be nice if the process were this simple, the truth of the matter is that your biochemical makeup is unique to you, so your process of losing weight and getting in shape might look a little different than other peoples. And that’s okay! You might never be a size 2 or have six-pack abs that reflect those of a body builder. That’s okay, too.

The important thing to remember when it comes to physical fitness is that feeling healthy is just as important as looking it. Usually if you are taking the right approach and listening to your own body about living a healthy lifestyle, you won’t just see results on the outside, you’ll feel them on the inside as well.

It is impossible to do this without making sure we are getting the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals our body needs to be in their best shape. If you have been working out and dieting for months and haven’t seen any positive changes as a result, chances are likely that you are neglecting certain foods and vitamins from trying to cut out a particular food group or only modifying your approach in the gym, rather than the kitchen as well.

You need to remember to treat your body like a car. You can shine and polish it to look great on the outside, but if you aren’t taking the right steps to maintain what’s under the hood, it’s not going to take you very far.

A person who is determined to lose weight by extreme dieting is bound to be nutrient deficient at some point. And over the long term, those very deficiencies could damage a person’s immune system, thus increasing their risk of becoming ill and having ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immune deficiencies, etc.

“It’s suggested that we eat 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies daily, but according to 2009 statistics, no state or territory in the U.S. has over 50% of their population consuming fruit more than twice a day, or vegetables 3 times a day.  It actually has decreased a bit.”

Make no mistake: Attempting to look our best isn’t a bad thing. There’s nothing wrong with trying to improve yourself.  We ALL should strive to be better in some way; that’s the basic premise of my book. Unfortunately, what we want and the METHODS we use may not be the best for us. Some of the things we’re doing to ourselves may be doing more harm than good.

It is important to get honest with yourself about which goals are realistic and which are setting an impossibly high standard for you to meet. I elaborate on all of this in my book, including which vitamins and nutrients will help you stay energized and motivated to work out, without contaminating your body with toxic ingredients and empty calories.

While making the decision to eat healthier and work out more is progress within itself, I understand the frustration many people experience when they aren’t getting anywhere near the results they want. It’s not that your body is not capable of losing weight and toning muscle, but rather that you need some outside advice to offer you the guidance and insight you need. You don’t want to waste more energy or time than necessary to get healthier. It shouldn’t feel like a punishment! It should feel like a reward. So if you have been trying to improve your physical fitness, and are repeatedly hitting a wall of defeat and discouragement, my book may offer you the solutions you need.

The truth is that you don’t ever really know how healthy somebody is just by looking at them. They can be very thin but be extremely deficient in a lot of vitamins and nutrients. Don’t let your physical appearance become a distraction for your physical fitness!

How Healthy are Protein Shakes?

Not all protein shakes have healthy ingredients and can act as a nutritious meal replacement. Because they’re packed with heavy amounts of protein, they often lack significant amounts of other essential nutrients.

As there’s potential disadvantages with any dietary supplement, you should always strive to get nourishment from whole foods as much as possible. This should actually limit your consumption of supplements like protein shakes, because whole foods are much more sufficient at providing the nutrients you need. Jeff White Protein Shake

Understandably, protein shakes can greatly assist with weight loss; but, you shouldn’t use them for an extended period of time. You risk developing a nutritional deficiency and even regaining the weight you lost once you resume your normal eating habits, when subjected to long-term use.

Protein shakes on their own may not cause health issues, but if your diet is already high in protein, drinking them regularly could lead to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood cholesterol, and kidney complications.

Many people do not know cadmium was found in some protein shakes. They also may not realize they are being exposed to it and how it affects their bodies.

Cadmium is of no use to the human body and is toxic, even at low levels. The negative effects of cadmium on the body are numerous and can impact nearly all systems in the body, including cardiovascular, reproductive, the kidneys, eyes, and even the brain.

Healthy Alternatives to Energy Drinks by Jeff White

We’re living our lives in the fast lane in an on-the-go society, and a lot of people are fueling their hectic lifestyles with coffee, energy drinks and other highly caffeinated beverages. Yet currently, the energy drink craze is still a dominating trend in combating the afternoon slump. We often rely on caffeine and sugar to temporarily fuel our energy in hopes that we may perform optimally and meet our daily demands.Jeff White Energy Drinks

Everywhere we look we’re bombarded with energy drinks! You can find them in every store, in vending machines and even gyms. Although the contents may vary in different energy drinks–some being less harmful than others–, it’s still good to be aware of the potential dangers, and even more the healthy alternatives!

There are many natural conveniences to combat just about anything. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, a nice warm chamomile tea can rock you right to sleep. Or if you have trouble staying awake throughout the day, as in this case, you can boost your energy with small healthy snacks like a bag full of nuts or a can of fruits.

Here are some other healthy energy boosters you should try before resorting to the quick fix of energy drinks:

  • Snack on healthy carbohydrates, such as apples and oatmeal

  • Include foods containing iron, such as spinach, nuts, oysters and dark chocolate, in your diet

  • Drink cold water to increase energy for up to two hours

  • Take a quick 10-minute walk

  • Catch a 20-minute power nap

Healthy Snacks by Jeff White

Contrary to popular belief, snacks are a great health investment. Make sure to carry some healthy snacks to work that can refuel your energy throughout the day!

Given our busy schedules, most people don’t have time to prepare proper meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and barely have time to sit down and enjoy them! Our on-the-go society has become snack-obsessed. On the surface, this may seem problematic, but nutritionists and other health experts actually encourage this trend, claiming that bigger meals offer a bigger crash and need for sugary snacks to refuel our energy.

“The regular influx of food with a little-and-often approach keeps your energy level stable and makes it easier for you to cope with everything you have to do in a day,” says nutritionist Natalie Savona.

Instead of eating large meals throughout the day, try eating smaller meals with supplementary snacks in between.

Don’t underestimate the nutritional benefit of a small snack; it can actually go a long way!

Let’s take walnuts for example…

Children’s Health by Jeff White

In recent years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increasingly become a health risk in children and has more than tripled since 1971. According to the American Heart Association, it’s the No. 1 health concern among parents in the United States.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):

The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.

As parents it’s necessary that we not only pursue fitness for ourselves, but for our children as well. Their health is equally important and increasingly at risk. Jeff White Fitness Solutions

You have to train them early on to develop healthy habits. The sooner, the better. Staying physically active is an important part in child development. Get your kids involved in sports or other physical activities!

Also, start your kids on a healthy diet—get them accustomed to eating healthy foods regularly; that way, it isn’t so much of a task (or fight) later down the line. Get rid of the junk food and start stocking your pantry with some healthy, tasty snacks! Some great substitutes are raisins, dark chocolate and apple sauce.

Most importantly, set a good example for your children. Teach them health and fitness by displaying healthy habits yourself. Don’t just tell them; show them. Leading by example is key.
